Discover Welland Community
Located in the centre of Niagara. Within a half hour or less, residents can travel to Niagara Falls, Niagara-On-The-Lake, St. Catharines, Port Colborne and Buffalo. It has been traditionally known as the place where rails and water meet, referring to the railways from Buffalo to Toronto and Southwestern Ontario, and the waterways of Welland Canal and Welland River, which played a great role in the city’s development. The city is separated by the Welland River and Welland Canal which links Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
In addition to its downtown area, the City is home to 7 plazas, Chelwood Gate with 8 stores, Lincoln Centre with 24, Northtown Shopping Centre with 13, Rose City Plaza with 15, South Pelham Market with 10, Thorold Road and Rice Road Plaza with 10 and the Welland Plaza with 25. Then of course there is the Seaway Mall, a 555,000 square foot regional shopping center with 125 stores.
Outdoor enthusiasts marvel at the beauty and serenity of Merritt Island – a natural paradise located steps from downtown, between the Welland Recreational Waterway and the Welland River. On trails that are part of the Greater Niagara Cycle Route, visitors and residents alike enjoy walking, hiking, cycling, rollerblading or simply picnicking in the park.
